How army pension is calculated

Service pension = 50% of your last reckonable emoluments — that is, last basic pay plus Military Service Pay — subject to a minimum of ₹9,000, rounded up to the next rupee. Dearness Relief (currently 60%) is then added on top. The rules, the exceptions and two fully worked examples are below — or skip straight to the Service Pension Calculator.
The formula, rule by rule
1. Half of your emoluments. The Government of India's 7th CPC pension implementation order for defence forces (DESW letter dated 05.09.2017, Para 5.1) fixes the service pension at 50% of the emoluments last drawn.
2. Emoluments = basic pay + MSP. The Army Officers Pay Rules 2017 and the Army Pay Rules 2017 (for JCOs/OR), Rule 5(2), say Military Service Pay is "counted as pay for the purpose of computation of dearness allowance and pension". MSP is ₹15,500 per month for officers and ₹5,200 for JCOs and other ranks. Leaving MSP out is the single most common way people under-estimate their own pension.
3. Minimum ₹9,000. If half of your emoluments comes to less than ₹9,000, the pension is stepped up to ₹9,000 (PCDA Circular 570). This is before Dearness Relief.
4. Round up. A fraction of a rupee is rounded off to the next higher rupee (Note 1 under Para 5 of the 05.09.2017 letter).
5. Dearness Relief on top. DR is a percentage of the basic pension, revised twice a year. It is 60% w.e.f. 1 January 2026 (DoP&PW OM No. 42/02/2024-P&PW(D), 24.04.2026). Whatever the current rate is on the day you read this, our calculators pull it from one dated rates file.
Who qualifies
The Pension Regulations for the Army, Part-I set the minimum qualifying service for a service pension:
- JCOs and other ranks — 15 years (Regulation 47)
- Officers — 20 years (Regulation 34; 15 years for late entrants)
Leave before that, and the entitlement is not a service pension — gratuity and other terminal benefits follow their own rules.
Two worked examples
Havildar, basic pay ₹35,000
- Emoluments: 35,000 + 5,200 (MSP) = ₹40,200
- Service pension: 50% = ₹20,100 per month
- Dearness Relief at 60%: ₹12,060
- In hand: ₹32,160 per month (before any commutation)
Lieutenant Colonel, basic pay ₹1,21,200
- Emoluments: 1,21,200 + 15,500 (MSP) = ₹1,36,700
- Service pension: 50% = ₹68,350 per month
- Dearness Relief at 60%: ₹41,010
- In hand: ₹1,09,360 per month

What changes the picture
- Commutation — you can take a lump sum against up to 50% of the pension; that portion of the basic pension is deducted for 15 years, but DR keeps running on the full pension (DoP&PW OM 42/15/2022-P&PW(D)/1, 25.10.2022). The Commutation Calculator shows both sides of that bargain.
- Disability element — if the Release Medical Board accepted a disability of 20% or more as attributable to or aggravated by service, an element is payable on top — its own calculator and rules are here.
- Income tax — a service pension is taxable as salary; what is and is not exempt is on the pension-and-tax page.
- For the family — family pension follows different percentages (30/60/100) — calculator and the types explained.
Questions and answers
Is MSP counted in the army pension calculation?
Yes. The Army Pay Rules 2017 state that Military Service Pay is counted as pay for the purpose of computing dearness allowance and pension. So the pension base is last basic pay plus MSP — ₹15,500 for officers, ₹5,200 for JCOs and other ranks.
What is the minimum army pension?
₹9,000 per month, before Dearness Relief, as per PCDA Circular 570 read with the 7th CPC orders. If the 50% calculation comes to less than ₹9,000, the pension is stepped up to ₹9,000, and DR is added on top.
How many years of service are needed for a service pension?
As per the Pension Regulations for the Army, the minimum qualifying service is 15 years for JCOs and other ranks (Regulation 47) and 20 years for officers (Regulation 34; 15 years for late entrants).
If I commute part of my pension, does my Dearness Relief also reduce?
No. Dearness Relief is calculated on the full pension before commutation — confirmed by DoP&PW OM No. 42/15/2022-P&PW(D)/1 dated 25.10.2022. Only the basic pension portion is reduced for 15 years; DR keeps running on the full amount.
Is this the same as OROP?
No. This page explains the base formula that fixes a pension at retirement. One Rank One Pension is a separate, periodic revision that brings the pensions of earlier retirees in line with current retirees of the same rank and service, through notified tables. The base formula stays the same.
