Agniveer, after the four years — the money, the doors, and the honest list

The first Agniveer batch enrolled in 2022–23, which means the four-year question has stopped being theoretical. Most of what is written about it is speculation. This page sticks to what the government has actually announced, with the announcement cited — and it is equally clear about what is not given, because that is where families get misled.
The money that comes with you
- Seva Nidhi — your 48 months of 30% contributions (₹5,02,200) plus an equal government match, with interest at the declared rates — about ₹11.71 lakh by the government's own announcement, and income-tax free. The calculator shows the month-by-month build-up.
- A skill certificate — the trade skills and experience of the four years, recorded in a certificate meant for the civil job market.
- What ends: the ₹48 lakh non-contributory life cover is for the engagement period — it does not continue after exit.
The honest list — what is NOT given
- No pension, no gratuity — the scheme's own announcement says it plainly: "There shall be no entitlement to gratuity and pensionary benefits."
- No ex-serviceman status — so ESM-linked doors (CSD, ECHS, ESM job quota) do not open for a released Agniveer. The Army's own enrolment terms say it in one line — Agnipath recruitment rally notification, Para 2(c)(iii): "Agniveers will not be eligible for any kind of pension or gratuity, neither will they be eligible for Ex Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), Canteen Stores Department (CSD) facilities, Ex Serviceman status and other related benefits." The Navy's Agniveer terms carry the same line.
- No MSP during the four years — that belongs to regular terms.
The doors that open
- Retention — up to 25%. Selection into the regular cadre against application and performance; those retained serve a further minimum of 15 years on regular terms — with pension, MSP and the rest.
- CAPFs and Assam Rifles — 10% reservation. The Ministry of Home Affairs reserved 10% of vacancies for Agniveers completing four years, with 3 years' age relaxation — 5 years for the first batch (announced 18 June 2022).
- Defence-side openings. Reservations and preferences have been announced for the Indian Coast Guard, defence civilian posts and defence PSUs [the individual orders to be pinned before this line is treated as final].
- State police preferences. Several states have announced preference or reservation for ex-Agniveers in police recruitment — the terms differ state by state, so go by your own state's notification, not by a list on any website.
⚠ The habit that matters in year 3 Every door above runs on documents and windows: the skill certificate, service records, the reservation's proof-of-service, and recruitment notifications with dates. Start collecting the papers a year before release — the reservation is real, but it is claimed through a form with a deadline, not given automatically.
Frequently asked questions
How much money will I actually get?
Your ₹5.02 lakh + the government's ₹5.02 lakh + interest — about ₹11.71 lakh by the government's own announcement, tax-free. Leaving before four years changes it: you get your own contribution with interest, without the match.
Do I get ex-serviceman status?
No — and it is better to hear it plainly here than at a canteen gate. ESM-linked benefits do not apply to a released Agniveer. Those retained in regular service earn them with regular terms.
What exactly is the CAPF reservation?
10% of vacancies in the CAPFs and Assam Rifles for Agniveers who complete four years, with 3 years' age relaxation — 5 for the first batch. It is claimed in the recruitment process; watch the notifications.
Will I be kept back in the Army?
Up to 25% are, against application and performance — and then it is a fresh engagement of minimum 15 years on regular terms. It is selection, not a right; plan for both outcomes.
